Installing Solar Panels on Flat Roofs

solar powered car

Before you can install solar panels on a flat roof, you will need to get permission from the Fire Department or the Department of Buildings. You must apply for a variance to the Fire Department to be granted special permission to alter fire code. For the time being, you can only file your application by paper, but electronic filing is expected to be allowed by the end of 2019.

Before you install

Make sure to plan ahead if your flat roof will be covered by solar panels. You need to ensure the panels are installed correctly and allow enough ventilation. They shouldn't interfere in any way with the roof's normal functions. The best racking system will maximise the amount of solar power you get from your panels.

There are two basic methods for installing solar panels for flat roofs. Either mount them directly to the roof or use a ballasted system which secures them with weights. There are also hybrid systems, which combine both methods.

Pay attention to wind speed

It is important to take into account wind speed when installing solar panel for flat roofs. The performance of your panel installation may be affected if it is subject to strong winds. You might consider increasing the thickness or racking system used to mount solar panels if there are high winds.

You must know the direction of the wind to calculate the windspeed. ASCE 7-16 Figure 29.3-1 shows the wind direction and speed for buildings with flat roofs. This information will allow you to calculate the weight of solar panels and how much electricity they will produce.

Consider tilted mounting system

If you have a flat roof, you may want to consider a tilted mounting system for your solar panels. The tilt of your solar panels will help them to produce more energy, and the tilt can be changed once installed. In some cases, solar panels that have less than two degrees of tilt may not be covered by warranty companies.

Another consideration is whether trees will shade the solar panels, which can lower the energy output. If there are no trees blocking sunlight, a flat roofing option is better. In addition, a flat roof is more aesthetically pleasing than one with a slanted roof.

Plan permission

Before you begin installing solar panels on your flat roof, you should first contact the planning office in your area. This office can tell you if you need planning permission and provide guidance on how to go about applying for permission. Within eight weeks, you should receive your decision. If the planning office finds that your plans will cause a problem for the neighbourhood, they may reject your application. If this happens, you have the right to appeal the decision. To assist you in this process, contact a reliable solar company.

After getting planning permission, you can begin the installation of solar panels on a flat roofing. Although the process is similar to that of installing solar cells on a flat roof, you must adhere to local planning laws. You also need to obtain the required building permits. This will avoid any issues with the council or neighbours.
